Denny’s South Keys
2208 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON
When you come in the main door, walk straight ahead to the back room.
This is where we met last month and is at South Keys Shopping Centre, right near Bank Street. Check the www.ottawasfs.ca web site for details or contact exec@ottawasfs.ca
Hopefully the weather will be better this time.
Last month we featured local authors and their books. They are welcome to bring books again but we would like our artist members–painters, artists and cartoonists–to bring out their works for showing off or sale. We know there’s lots of creative folks in our group and would like to see what all they do. If you have a favourite piece of SFF or Horror bring it along for everyone to enjoy.
Please email events@ottawasfs.ca to let us know how many to expect.

Robert Sawyer to be honoured at Can-Con, Oct 4-6, Ottawa
Can-Con will be held October 4-6, 2013 at the Minto Suite Hotel, Downtown Ottawa. The Conference on Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature, “The cutting edge of science fiction and fantasy,” put on by The Society for Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature. For the first time in 30 years — and only the fourth time ever — the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA) is bestowing a Lifetime Achievement award, and the recipient is Ottawa-born author Robert J. Sawyer. Sawyer is to get his award in Ottawa on Oct. 6. He is one of only eight writers — and the only Canadian — to win all three of the world’s top awards for best science-fiction novel of the year:
Star Wars Identity exhibit extended to Oct. 14th
If you haven’t had a chance to experience the force at the Canada Space and Aviation Museum, there’s no need to turn to the dark side just yet. The museum’s Star Wars Identity exhibit has been extended until Oct. 14.

Aurora Awards 2013
Nominations for the Aurora awards close on April 15. For reasons that may be apparent I’m hoping as many people as possible nominate works they’ve read and liked. A final ballot will be compiled from the top nominees in May. To nominate you have to be a paid-up member of The Canadian Science Fiction & Fantasy Association (CSFFA); this will cost you $10 but there are several ways to pay including Paypal.
CSFFA’s link is www.prixaurorawards.ca You can nominate (up to three items in each category) electronically there, or download a mail-in form.
You get one chance to vote, with no second thoughts, so I recommend that you at least look at the list of eligible works assembled at www.canspecfic.com/2012-
Think of it as keeping SF democratic.
Thanks,
John

From Lin Daniel, sending from jan’s email account: I’m trying to reach as many of his friends as I can with some important and time-sensitive information.
For those who don’t already know, my apologies for dropping this on you so abruptly: jan howard finder, The Wombat, passed away 26 February 2013 just after midnight, at the hospital where he was receiving treatment for cancer. I was with him at the time, and his passing was peaceful.
Following are the details of the memorial convention for jan. Please share this info far and wide, since I’m sure a few names are missing from these lists of people who want to know and perhaps attend.
WombatCon – jan howard finder Memorial and Irish Wake
When: 1 June 2013, starting noonish
Where: Holiday Inn Wolf Road, 205 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12205 +1-518-533-1720

Please come. I would love to see you, to meet you for the first time, or meet you in person. If you cannot attend, but wish to share your memories of jan, please send email. I’ll be posting material to jan’s blog.
